March 6, 2018 – Following our commitment to Open Source philosophy, we released today not only the CAD files of the BCN3D Sigmax 3D printer but all our know how.
On September 25, 2017, we unveiled our newest 3D printer, the BCN3D Sigmax 3D Printer at the TCT Show. The Sigmax is a professional FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) desktop 3D printer characterized by its massive printing volume and its Independent Dual Extruder (IDEX) system. Today, we are excited to share with the whole community the Source files of the Sigmax.
As we did in 2015 when we released the Sigma Source files, our goal is to spread the technology all over the world, showing that an innovative technological company can share its knowledge and keep leading its sector. We are very proud of our daily work and we are delighted to be able to share it with everyone. We were born thanks to the Open Source community and we still want to continue contributing to it.
The released documentation covers five key areas — mechanics, electronics, firmware, software, and process engineering — and is hosted on dedicated BCN3D GitHub repositories. Furthermore, a brief explanation of the Sigmax history can be found, where it is explained the main reasons for releasing a wider 3D printer. All the information is published under the CERN Open Hardware Licence (CERN OHL) and General Public License v3 (GPLv3).
For announcing such a great step for the Open Source 3D printing community, we’ve contacted Richard Horne, better known as has RichRap. Richard has been one of our referents since we were born in 2011 and is a pioneer of the RepRap project.

Regarding hardware, the user will have access to all the mechanical and electronics designs, including the 3D files, the assembling 2D drawings and the bill of materials with our suppliers. Regarding firmware and software, we have published the BCN3D Sigmax’s firmware –Marlin’s evolution- source code, as well as the BCN3D Cura source code files, our slicing software. On the other hand, the user will have access to all the assembly documentation and tooling that we use daily in the assembly process.
As Richard Horne (RichRap) states, “It takes a lot of time and effort to get all the complex design files into a state for release to users and the 3D printing community, but it has such a great benefit for both the manufacturer and existing users of their machines. The community also benefits from current machine designs being released as quickly as possible after a stable product is launched. BCN3D seem to be speeding up in the release of design files after the launch of a new machine. This is to be highly encouraged. It’s often an extremely busy time for a manufacturer when they launch a new product. I take this open-source release of the Sigmax CAD files, to show that the machine has quickly stabilized in the market. BCN3D feel confident to release the design files and allow users to further benefit from the design evolution of the Sigma range over the last few years.”
